As many of you may know, I spent a few days this week attending a programming conference in Las Vegas. Throughout my time in the computer world, I’ve discovered that guys rarely talk to me, and when they do, I usually wish that they wouldn’t. I offer the following conversation transcript from this week as evidence why.

Guy I’ve never seen or talked to before: You look geeky.
Me: *Did he seriously just say that to me?* Excuse me?
Guy: You look geeky…
Me: *Must…walk….faster!*
Guy: …with your bag over your shoulder and your short hair.

I’d like to point out that the bag he’s talking about was my laptop bag. He had his laptop bag too, so I’m not sure if he just thinks he pulls it off especially well or what.

For those of you wondering just how awful I looked that day, here’s a quick pic.:

I don’t claim to have looked that great, but was it really bad enough to make me stand out as a geek at a programming conference, of all places? Surely I looked hipper than the people there with the rolling backpacks. In any event, years from now this will probably be the only thing I remember from the week. I’m sure my employer considers that money well spent.
